DEEP/SHALLOW OPENS APRIL 29TH

ANNOUNCING THE OPENING EVENT FOR DEEP / SHALLOW
Friday, April 29th 7:00pm to 10:00pm
at The Gowanus Studio Space
166 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Brooklyn

Reference material is as often heavily researched as it is happened upon. Artworks in DEEP/SHALLOW were made in response to The Library’s collection of books and other printed materials donated from artists’ own reference libraries. The appropriation of these resources forces a contextual continuity (which normally occurs organically and over time) across disciplines, content and processes. DEEP/SHALLOW will be on view at The Gowanus Studio Space from April 29th through May 29th 2011.

The Library collects published references recommended by artists in The Gowanus Studio Space’s immediate and greater community; to compile a physical and online database of pamphlets, manuals, exhibition catalogs, books, newspapers, magazines, etc. which have visually influenced artists. To see a list of materials collected thus far visit OUR TUMBLR PAGE.

The Gowanus Studio Space and EyelevelBQE Gallery have collaborated on partner exhibitions at their Brooklyn spaces to activate and launch this new project. Exhibiting artists in High/Low deal with ideas surrounding libraries and shelving, while artwork in Deep/Shallow responds to sources in the Library’s collection.

HIGH/LOW at Eyelevel BQE Gallery
On View April 9th Through May 7th, 2011
There is no one library. The entire world’s resources combined at any one moment are still only part of the library. Therefore, instead of attempting to possess knowledge, this exhibition asks how to contain/present/expand/share knowledge. Just as reading and writing are not necessarily separate activities, HIGH/LOW suggests that using/storing/designing/collecting are not necessarily separate, either.

High, low, deep and shallow refers to the basic measurements that are considered when designing a bookshelf, which determine the capacity, the footprint or amount of space required for each stack or unit that forms a library. But this title also makes reference (humorously) to the actual content of a library, particularly an image library.
