Our Lovely Wepplo Press
We recently got a visit from Ms. Julie Wepplo, the niece of the creator of our beloved Wepplo press. Julie’s uncle, George Wepplo, unfortunately passed away recently. She wanted to come by the studio to say hello to us and to visit her relative’s brainchild. We were excited to meet her! And we learned a lot about the man behind the machine.
Early in his career his company, Minnesota Custom Fabrication, built funny cars and drag racers, most notably the “Gopher Twin” which had a 16 cylinder engine and competed at Indianapolis in 1970.
He was involved not only with press fabrication but also built machinery for the manufacture of after-market tractor parts.
Some of the tractors he helped modify were used in tractor pull competitions, as noted on the website for the “United Pullers of Minnesota”.
George A. Wepplo age 74 of Forest Lake, passed away on August 26, 2013. George owned and operated Wepplo Press, Minnesota Custom Fabricators and was the founder of Atlas Tractor. He is survived by sons, Daniel(Claire), Karl(Elisa), and Andrew and daughters, Emily(Thomas), Suzanne(Scott), and three grandchildren, Gabriel, Kaitlyn and Kylie, ex-wife, Judith, brothers, Ernest (Bonnie), Peter (Donna), and Richard, as well as many other relatives and friends.
The Wepplo press at GSS was acquired by Julia Samuels from the printmaker Rob Swainston. We do not know from whom he obtained the press.
