In this six week introductory bookbinding class students will make a series of non-adhesive book structures from start to finish. Different methods of bookbinding that will be covered include a single signature pamphlet book, accordion book, japanese stab binding, and a double needle coptic stitch. Students will leave the class with an extensive knowledge of bookbinding materials and techniques as well as five finished hand-bound books and a handmade paper folio. No bookbinding experience necessary.

  • Non-members:$275 total :$250.00 + a one time supply fee of $25
  • Members: $200 total: $150.00 + a one time supply fee of $25
  • 2.5 hour sessions for 6 weeks (you cannot split up the classes)

The planned curriculum:

OCT 13:

  • Intro to bookbinding; Show various examples; Go over supplies, materials, paper grain, paper cutting and folding, hole punching.
  • Mini screen printing cover papers workshop with already exposed screens.
  • Single Signature Pamphlet stitch and decorative variations.

OCT 20:

  • Bring in or make more decorative papers with already exposed screens.
  • Accordion books and repetition and sequence. Pop up book examples.

OCT 27:

  • Japanese stab binding variations; french fold paper. Bring in or make more decorative papers with exposed screens.

NOV 3:

  • Bring in or make more decorative papers with exposed screens.
  • Double needle coptic stitch
  •  

NOV 10:

  • Bring in or make more decorative papers with exposed screens.
  • Double needle coptic stitch and begin Paper folio

NOV 17:

  • Finish binding books, finish folio, class critique.

Instructor: Julia Elsas

Julia Elsas was born in Birmingham, Alabama and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.  She received a BA from Carleton College and an MFA from UC Davis. While studying at Davis, she received the Robert Arneson Award, the Fay Nelson Award, and two Freedmond Gadberry Awards. Past exhibitions include: Art Merge Lab, Los Angeles, CA; One Mile Gallery, Kingston, NY; International Print Center, New York, NY; CUNY Graduate Center, New York, NY; Bronx Art Space, New York, NY; Textile Arts Center, Brooklyn, NY; Barbara Archer Gallery, Atlanta, GA; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; Branch Gallery, Durham, NC; Lump Gallery, Raleigh, NC; Cinders, Brooklyn, NY; Pigman Gallery, San Francisco, CA; JAYJAY, Sacramento, CA; Richmond Art Center, Richmond, CA. She was an Artist Fellow at Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst, VA in 2009 and 2010 as well as an Artist-in-Residence at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA in 2010.  She a 2014 Resident Artist at Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn, NY and teaches printmaking and bookbinding at SUNY Purchase and Montclair State University.
