Intro to TIG Welding with Allen Slamic
Tungsten Inert Gas [TIG] welding is an arc process that uses a non-comsumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. The weld area is protected from atmospheric contamination by an inert shielding gas. A filler metal (rod) is normally used in the welding process. TIG welding is commonly used for welding thin sheet metals, aluminum, stainless steel, magnesium, and copper alloys. TIG welding provides greater control over the look of the weld than other types of welding processes. This type of welding is typically used when welds will be highly visible.
This class will teach you the basics of TIG welding. We will focus on welding steel for practice. Aluminum and stainless steel will be introduced after a considerable amount of practice with steel. Students should have a small project in mind, no larger than an average night stand or small stool. The materials fee will cover practice metal and basic TIG supplies, but students are encouraged to bring their own materials for their individual projects. PREVIOUS METAL SHOP EXPERIENCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Allen Slamic is the co-founder of ALEXALLEN STUDIO; a Gowanus Brooklyn based architecture and design studio. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture where he received his Master in Architecture degree in 2007.
