The Gowanus Studio Space Presents:
TEMPORALITY AWARENESS

as part of SPRING/BREAK Art Show
in conjunction with ARMORY WEEK 2012
at OLD SCHOOL
KRISTA PETERS
SIRRA SIGURDARDOTTIR
Curated by ANGELA CONANT

Working from Iceland, Canada, Haiti and New York City, artists address hypothetical and real moments along the timeline of ecological and cultural collapse. Works in this exhibition record the history of civilization. They collect material that can withstand disaster; and attempt to preserve and prolong existence as we know it. These works reflect our current moment of temporality awareness.

Atom Cianfarani, a garbage lover and survival connoisseur, offers a “72 hour survival pack” to help you escape any urban apocalypse. Made from garbage off the streets of Toronto, Canada and New York City, Exit New York includes a protective suit and shelter quilt made from reflective, insulating mylar coffee bags, and inscribed with a map of walkable exit strategies from New York City. The work instructs viewers to compile their own packs from discarded material.

Ben Cohen has converted a diesel-powered generator to run on used vegetable oil, the fruits (french fries) of which are available for consumption. The generator powers lights and other equipment throughout the exhibition. Cohen produces immediate sustenance and alternative power, mimicking the global struggle to preserve ecological integrity before it is too late.

Krista Peters’ sculpture installations amass found materials which might as well be remnants of our contemporary world after the event of the End of Days. Culled from an expedition to Haiti where she helped local artisans produce wares and grow small businesses, Peters selected objects for their repurposed aesthetic. Displaced and re-assembled, the works shadow their original context of a culture in mourning.

Sirra Sigurdardottir hails from Iceland where she shot video in Hveragerdi, a small town which suffered a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in 2008. Her work for this exhibition shows residents of Hveragerdi, who have experienced economic as well as ecological upheaval, as they re-live the tremor in an earthquake simulator. Sigurdardottir’s side-by-side display of the subjects’ naked reactions is a striking visualization of community, societal and world shared experience.

Assumptions are made that physical uncertainty compares to economic disaster. Objects are collected and reorganized in the light of a second existence. Temporality Awareness compares response from places which have undergone real existential threats; to those still safe enough to focus on prevention and preservation.

SPRING/BREAK Art Show is the new curator-driven art fair during the Armory Arts Week. The fair will inhabit Old School, a four-story schoolhouse located in NoLIta from March 6th – March 11th, 2012. Featuring the projects of 23 curators, the show will abandon the traditional focus on galleries – offering a “break” from the typical art fair model – and showcase a range of New York City’s curatorial voices, all surrounding a single exhibition theme – Apocalist: the end of the world.

This one-day intensive workshop will demonstrate the chine colle technique that will promise consistent results every time. Chine collé roughly translates to “tissue glued,” and it traditionally refers to printing an inked intaglio plate and mounting a shaped sheet of paper onto a backing sheet at the same time. As this process was originally used with Eastern papers, this workshop will explore utilizing Gampi and Kozo fiber printmaking papers onto traditional Western papers. As the fiber structure of many Eastern papers offers a more delicate surface, Gampi and Kozo can capture finer details from an intaglio plate. Chine collé enables a printer to then mount these lightweight papers onto heavier weight cotton-based sheets. When using two colors of paper, subtle and beautiful results can occur!!This highly technical, detail-orientated process has its secrets, which will be disclosed. Preparing your own wheat starch paste will be covered along with basic printing strategies. It will be easy, clean and fun! While not mandatory, students are encouraged to bring their own etching plates to be used during class. Previous etching/printing experience suggested. Bring etching plates to print.

An exhibition from the GSS Printshop Residency Program
December 9th – January 13th
Opening Reception: December 9th, 7pm – 10pm
Featuring work from Yunmee Kyong, Michelle Levy, and Jomar Statkun

The Gowanus Studio Space presents Meditations on the Multiple, an exhibition of work made over the last six months by the GSS 2011 Printshop Residents. Residents have focused on printmaking as not simply the result of an artistic process but an essential part of a multi-disciplinary work.

In keeping with the GSS mission to facilitate production of artwork and encourage cross-disciplinary exchange, the GSS Printmaking Residency brings accomplished artists and dedicated printmakers into a community with fellow GSS studio members with the goal of fostering experimental collaboration along with ensuring the relevance of Printmaking in contemporary art practice.

Please join us for the opening reception, December 9th, 7pm to 10pm with performances by Jomar Statkun and Michelle Levy.
