DEEP/SHALLOW CLOSING EVENT:
An EVENING of READINGS and LIBRARY PERFORMANCE
Thursday, May 26th 7:00pm
Readings from 7:30pm until 8:30pm
followed by drinks and music
The Gowanus Studio Space presents an evening of readings and library performance conceived in the vein of those artworks exhibited in DEEP/SHALLOW. As the visual is derived from books, so is writing from visual art. Relics are activated, audiences roused, and spirits revived through the singular interaction of sharing writing through spoken word.
Featuring Readings by DEEP/SHALLOW Artists including Rob Andrews, Haley Hughes, Kendra Sullivan and Nichole Van Beek; as well as a special guest presentation by the Underground Library.
Deep / Shallow
April 29th through May 29th, 2011
Reference material is as often heavily researched as it is happened upon. Artworks in DEEP/SHALLOW were made in response to The Library’s collection of books and other printed materials donated from artists’ own reference libraries. The appropriation of these resources forces a contextual continuity (which normally occurs organically and over time) across disciplines, content and processes.

THE LIBRARY compiles published references recommended by artists in our immediate and greater community. We’ve begun the first search for library materials; collecting donated or recommended pamphlets, manuals, exhibition catalogs, books, newspapers, magazines, etc. which have visually influenced artists. Make your recommendation HERE.
HIGH/LOW DEEP/SHALLOW is a two-part exhibition which serves as a catalyst and launch for The Library at The Gowanus Studio Space.
HIGH/LOW was on view at Eyelevel BQE Gallery April 9th through May 7th, exhibiting installations and designs which address ideas surrounding library functions.
DEEP/SHALLOW exhibits work which is in conversation with one or more publications in the library’s collection. DEEP/SHALLOW will be on view at The Gowanus Studio Space through May 29th 2011.
