AUG 6th – Boat Names and Boat Lettering Workshop

with Laurie Churchman and Lisa Hutchinson

Starting at NOON at The Gowanus Studio Space.
$20 suggested donation.

Design and typography of boat names for pleasure craft are fascinating specimens of personal branding. The names themselves can be anything from kitsch to classic and concrete to abstract. Once layered with design elements— typefaces, colors and illustrations —they are distinctly personal expressions that reflect culture, class, gender, history and ego.
This weekend workshop will cull from Laurie Churchman’s McGraw-Hill book: BOATNAMES, chronicling the evolution of boat names from Egyptian times to the present, and featuring design considerations for modern pleasure boat’s names. The workshop will also feature Boat-letterer Lisa Hutchinson and give workshoppers hands-on experience with traditional sign lettering and boat-lettering techniques.
