The GSS Steering Committee is a group of our members who have stepped up of their own accord to fill predetermined roles for the studio’s administration.

From the GSS Bylaws:

Each member of the steering committee with be compensated with equivalent of a basic membership for each role they carry, not to exceed the total amount the member owes to the studio on a monthly basis. Any single member of the steering committee may be allowed to carry up to three roles, but no two of the following: Membership Director, Facilities Director, Artistic / Programming Director. The committee as a whole must not operate with less than four people. The initial steering committee will be comprised of current or previous members. Future openings may be open to the public for application, but any non member must become a member of the studio before being able to hold a seat on the committee.

The steering committee will meet at least once a month to discuss maintenance and management of the studio. The meeting will be scheduled at least one week in advance, and best efforts must be made to accommodate the schedules of all members involved. Emergency meetings may be scheduled more quickly with unanimous consent of the committee. If required, any steering committee member can make arrangements to vote by proxy or in absentia. Quorum must be met at any meeting to make irrefutable decisions. In order to meet quorum, at least three of the Membership Director, Treasurer, Artistic/Programming Director, and the Facilities Director or half of the entire Steering Committee members must be present.

The steering committee will only make decisions based on unanimous consensus of the committee members present. If at any point the committee resolves that a consensus cannot be made, the issue must be brought to a vote by the full studio membership.  Certain issues will always be brought to vote by the entire membership, and these issues include changes to these bylaws; major construction, capital improvements, or investments; raises in compensation for the committee; confirmation or removal of members of the committee.

The steering committee is responsible for maintaining the mission of the studio by providing resources for artists and designers; including tools, space, and a respectful and supportive environment conducive for making work.  The steering committee will offer programming that serves the members and community; maintain and seek to improve the studio’s resources, including the shops and common space, to a level that satisfies the reasonable expectations of its members and community; ensure roles necessary to running the studio are filled and being performed adequately; and maintain and secure the financial health of the studio.

The steering committee will act in a transparent manner, communicating important information to the studio members regularly. At a minimum, the following information will be made available to the members in a timely fashion: steering committee meetings’ schedules, agendas and notes; openings for positions on the Steering Committee; calendar of events, programs and other public use of the space; introduction of new members.eas, and the people using the shops are being safe and respecting the tools, the common space, and each other; facilitating the organization of workshops designed to teach members and the public how to use the equipment as the programming manager deems necessary.”
